The MD Notebook A5 is simplicity itself. The makers want for people to enjoy the comfort of writing and the appeal of the materials themselves. It was out of this desire that they designed MD Notebooks with minimalism, to enhance the enjoyment of writing.
Naturally, ease of use is also an important element of writing comfort. Beneath the pure and simple appearance you will find a variety of innovations.
MD Notebooks are created using traditional thread-stitched book-binding methods, with 16 pages of paper folded into a bundle and stitched down the spine. This book-binding method ensures that the notebook opens evenly and is highly durable. The book-binding method is usually applied in items that are used for a long time, such as pocketbooks and diaries. MD Paper Products adopted this method to achieve ultimate writing comfort, ensuring that the notebook opens fully 180 degrees.
MD Notebooks do not have a cover. This is because the use of cover could impact the writing comfort of MD Notebooks, potentially making them harder to open and the pages looser. This is why the MD Notebook is a design icon, with nothing hidden behind the cover and the cheesecloth mesh tape appended to the spine in the plain sight. With no cover and only cheesecloth reinforcing the spine, MD Notebooks are supple and open easily. However, you can protect your notebook with the cover of your choice: transparent vinyl, thick Córdoba paper or goat leather.
Paraffin Paper Cover
The MD Notebook is wrapped in a cover sheet of paraffin paper. This guards the notebook against dirt and grime. You can use the notebook with the paraffin paper or use one of the available covers (goat leather, paper or clear). Once you have completed writing in your notebook, you can wrap it in the paraffin paper once again and place it on a bookshelf. The choice is entirely yours.
All MD Notebooks come with index label stickers designed to match the simple and pure cover. On two stickers we have printed the words IDEA and DIARY, which are most often used. The remaining stickers are left blank for you to use yourself. The stickers can be used to securely fix the bookmark string in the upper corner of the notebook.
Ink Friendly MD Paper
The MD Notebook A5 uses MD paper, developed in the 1960s. The warm colour that is easy on the eye is ideally suited to writing with a fountain pen. This paper is designed to provide a fine balance between a slight catch on the paper when writing and a smooth writing feel. With this paper, you can enjoy the sensation of writing.
Blank, Lined & Grid Sheet Options
The MD Notebook A5 is available in three page formats:
- Blank pages. This option is the ideal format for writing down ideas freely as they come to you, or even using a double page as a canvas for your thoughts.
- Lined Pages. This format provides a bold centerline so that the upper and lower pages can be used separately. Split a single page into two or a double page into four to arrange your notebook how you like, for writing memos, keeping a diary, or inserting dates for use as an appointment book.
- Grid Pages. The grid format features a 5mm square grid based on old Japanese manuscript paper. The grid is characterized by the small gaps between the squares. There is also a mark every five or ten squares to make counting characters even easier. The light blue grid lines do not distract from your writing or sketches.
The makers gave an extra dash of colour and fun to the minimalist MD Notebook. For each type of notebook, they have added a different colour bookmark string:
- red for blank
- blue for ruled lines
- white for grid
The bookmark string can be seen at the top of the spine, providing a further design feature when your notebook is placed on shelf. The coloured string, peeking out from the pure white spine cover, adds a modern accent.
